Never stop pushing yourself to learn

I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. Painting is one of my top subjects! I specialize in digital painting, in programs such as Photoshop and GIMP. I do not specialize in traditional media such as oils and acrylic, but I can teach the fundamentals such as color theory and composition. I've worked for Disney Research as an artist for over a year. As a teacher, I've successfully helped students get admitted into their desired magnet schools, such as LaGuardia High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, and the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. I've also helped artists get their first freelancing gigs.

I teach online through Skype or Google Hangouts. During drawing lessons, I take screenshots of the student's artwork. If the student is using their webcam while drawing on paper, I have them hold up their drawings to the webcam so that I can take screenshots of their work. As I'm sharing my screen, I digitally draw my demonstrations and mark up student's work so that they can precisely pinpoint where they should revise their drawings. This has been most effective, and students show improvement over the course of each hour they have lessons with me. I have worked in art and graphic design professionally for the past 6 years, however I have been freelancing and creating art for myself since 1998. I previously worked for the Hayward Area Historical Society, which included assisting in design for exhibits as well as some teaching to visiting school groups. I have also been asked to teach small groups of children about art, or help with general homework on numerous occasions.
I work best one-on-one or in small groups, I can adjust my style to what a person needs after speaking with them for a while and understanding how they learn. I've found the best way to teach someone a new way of looking at something is to understand how they currently perceive it.

I am am a certified Reading Instruction Specialist and former fourth grade teacher. Most students rise 2-4 grade levels in under 50 hours of instruction using the Academic Associates Reading Program. The Academic Associates curriculum is a 13 lesson brain-based phonics curriculum. One of my favorite success stories is a student I'll call Mark. After completing only 7 lessons, Mark went from a 1.9 reading level to a 3.5 reading level. Working from still life, the landscape and possibly any subject matter that interests the student, we will learn how to translate what we see into convincing and successful renditions in oil paint, acrylic, or pastel. We'll start with basic painting skills, developing acurate measurement, understanding color, edge, and composition, and move on to tackling ambitious projects, capturing a convincing sense of light, and playing with the poetics of painting. I received my Bachelor of Arts in both Studio Art and Psychology from Brandeis University, Boston, and continued my studies for two years at the Jerusalem Studio School in Jerusalem, Israel, as a member of the Master Class with Israel Hershberg. I then received my Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and went on to teach at the Delaware College of Art and Design,Swarthmore College and Cornell College, as well as offering private lessons to all ages. I currently teach art online for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
My teaching style is encouraging and stimulating. I love what I do and I really enjoy sharing my knowledge with others.
