For instance, when teaching anything dealing with Greek Mythology, I like to pick out something from the myth that is relevant to today (like from "The Iliad," the character Ajax is known as being stronger than Greece, and the soap brand Ajax has the slogan of being "stronger than grease").

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

Drama is one of my top subjects! This is what I got my undergraduate degree in, so needless to say I love the subject! In addition to teaching students performance and audition basics, I love to teach theatre history and script analysis along with it.

I'm very laid back, but I know how to get results. I have always been a very disciplined student, but I realized pretty early in my academic career that unless I make the subject interesting for me, I'll never grasp the material. I make it a point to get to know every student so that I can personalize their learning style. The only way they'll learn and understand something is if they WANT to do so. My comments on tutoring Drama : I specialize in puppetry! It is great for helping quiet children find their voice, and students of any age to build self-confidence in front of an audience.

During the school year, I work as a curriculum coordinator and art teacher for an after school program in Lexington, Ma. This is my 6th year of teaching stimulating and unique art projects to children in grades K-5. I have interned as a graphic designer and also had jobs as a wedding photographer. My comments on tutoring Drama : I have been a theater artist all of my adult life. I can coach acting, tutor folks learning lines, or help a college student non major understand and know theater history.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly.
