Because English and literature is subjective, I use a nondirective approach to ensure that the student is exercising their creative problem solving skills and critical thinking skills. Basically, I ask them about their interpretation of the text or their own writing. With grammar, I typically model the correct use for the student two or three times, and then have them finish finding patterns and correcting mistakes themselves. I've taken courses in tutoring, grammar, Shakespeare, and writing composition, as well as worked in the University Writing Center at my university as a writing consultant. I currently tutor three Middle Eastern students in writing composition, conventions of English grammar, and health. I do freelance proofreading and editing.

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work. I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the final

Everyone learns in different ways so it's important to me that I get to know the students first. That way I can differentiate the lessons for each student. I have also learned that students are more engaged when it's a subject matter that they care about. Of course it's not realistic that this will always be the case. Sometimes you have to learn things that you are not interested in, but approaching these subjects from the way in which the student learns best, based on Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, can make learning not only possible, but maybe even fun. I have substitute taught for 2 years in all grades. I must be flexible, creative and outgoing while constantly adapting to new surroundings. I excel at drawing, writing and reading. I have my BA in art. I studied printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Art and finished my degree at PSU. I have my master's degree

I am familiar with teaching a wide variety of literature. I enjoy and have worked with middle school novels and more complex college level texts (and theoretical works). During my years teaching English literature, at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada, I quickly discovered that the most rewarding and effective moments between student and instructor occur in one-to-one meetings. The tutoring environment is the ideal classroom, where a single student’s learning needs, academic desires and questions can be fully catered to, fulfilled and explored. I have worked with first-year university students, middle school students, all levels of high school students, and older adults. My advanced education, extensive experience, sincere respect for my students, and genuine love and enthusiasm for literature and learning make me an effective and valuable educator. I posse

My teaching style is fun: relaxed and engaging for my students and for me too. I am serious about giving my clients the best and richest learning situation as possible. I use a modality designed just for that student and perhaps not offered at school. Since I am in a one on one setting I can ideally focus on just that one student's personal needs. I communicate clearly with all stake holders to ensure I am meeting the learner's needs and expectations. I know some of our relationships will be short term to get past an academic challenge and others may be longer to meet your needs. Whatever the length or circumstances I want it to be the best, positively memorable and educationally worthwhile experience for my student. Throughout my successful career as a teacher and school counselor, I've instructed every level from kindergarten to college level. Likewise I've had the privilege of worki

I'm a writing tutor with more than two years of experience tutoring college-level writing of all sorts, mainly papers but also essays and applications. I've also attended various training workshops about academic writing and helping English-language learners. My tutoring skill-set is robust. In addition to my skills and experience, I also bring kindness and patience to the tutoring table. Writing is a process, so we must try and try again in order to proceed. My tutoring style is geared towards establishing and maintaining a growth-oriented mindset. I aim to help you become more confident and independent in your own ability to write and to learn to write. In college, I worked as a writing tutor and as the head tutor of the writing center on campus. I've tutored for many hours on a variety of writing subjects. I've also though a lot about my tutoring style, and discussed it with oth

I am known for my amazing listening skills and empathy. I am a student of Non-violent communication and use it at every opportunity. I love to teach with symbolism and visual techniques. Most of all I find it is important to listen to the child and see how they need to be taught and adjust to their comfort levels. I feel that patience and compassion for different cultures is also key to the student’s success. I recently graduated with honors from PSU and have a strong desire to work with and help children. I have a passion for literacy and believe it has the power to change lives. I am a single mom of a 14-year-old son and have also volunteered with the African Women’s Coalition to tutor African Refugee children. Working with the children transformed my life and taught me the importance of knowledge.

Teaching comes as natural to me as parenting, the key is to set high but achievable goals, as well as firm expectations and boundaries. I have been regarded as a favorite teacher these past three years, and many former students come to visit me on their own time every week. I am patient, easy going, and considerate, but I do expect a level of rigor and effort that pushes my students to do their best. I come from the "Balanced Literacy" school of thought, and have used this practice to foster the growth of all of my students, regardless of their ability level. In addition, I am a pioneer in the use of the "Four Square Writing Method" as an organizational model for the writing process. It has been quite a hit with my students, as well as my colleagues. In these past five years, I have made a difference in the lives of hundreds of students. I can't wait to hit a thousand, ten thousand, and
