Experience Summary
I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the final stages of my dissertation for a doctorate in psychology, so I am always actively learning, too. My aspirations are to become a professor in higher education upon acquiring my Ph.D..
Teaching Style
I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.
My Hobbies
I enjoy reading, biking, grabbing coffee with my husband, running, and playing with my two young daughters.
Other Comments
Although I have a passion for learning, academics did not always come easy for me. I understand what it is like to struggle academically and see my handwork come to fruition. This is why I feel a propensity to help others achieve their goals just as others have helped me throughout my scholastic journey.
