Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive). Florida Writes is difficult for some students. Give your child an edge by selecting a tutor today on your terms, on your schedule, to suit your needs and within budget.

Taught state test writing preparation for many years in Massachusetts public alternative schools. Tutor extensively to prepare students for state and college exams. After attending (and teaching in) a graduate program in American/British Literature and Language at L.S.U., I realized that my true calling was teaching. I began teaching English, Journalism, S.A.T. Prep., Latin, and other subjects in Springfield, MA in 2003 in an alternative, urban high school. I taught (and tutored after school) until I moved to Florida in 2009, when my spouse began graduate studies at U.S.F. Since then, I have continued to tutor a wide range of students in subjects ranging from high school Latin, 5th grade Math, college English, S.A.T. and G.E.D. Tutoring is not my part-time job, it is a full time endeavor. I tutor in many subjects including Elementary, Middle and High School curriculums. I tutor all ages. By working with my students, their parents and teachers, we formulate a plan and goals for our sessions. Sometimes I am a tutor for a test, or a coach for a project or a study skills adviser. I have experience working with students with ADHD and those with specific learning issues and IEP's.

I have some experience with teaching writing skills at the middle school level and as part of the GED. My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment. I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents.

My teaching style is one of patience. I use a 'multi-sensory' approach; focusing on how the student learns. Some students learn from listening, seeing or looking; and others by touching objects. I like to use a variety of materials, books, videos, computers, dvds; puzzles, games; anything that will create that 'aha' learning moment. I like to create a positive learning environment; one that will allow the student to discover and grow. My teaching experience includes over 20 years of teaching children with special needs. In addition I have taught grades K-6 students in the regular classroom. I have also have experience teaching middle school math/science and writing.I am a certified Wilson Reading teacher; a specialized reading system for students with reading difficulties. I was a reading researcher for Florida State University. Presently I am a tutor for the Literacy Council of Manatee

Pre-K, K - 6, Middle School and High School are the grade levels I've taught. I have also been trained to coach teachers with learning strategies to make them more successful in the classroom. Parent education has always been a part of my role as a teacher. Active learning is the foundation of my teaching style at all levels. We learn more by experiencing the process first hand rather than being told. When learners enjoy themselves they're more likely to retain the learning. "Tell me" and "show me" are the styles teachers often use. I've found more success with "involve me." That leads to understanding. Brain research is also a foundation for my teaching style at all levels.

Although there are many ways to teach, I strongly believe in Experiential Education. Experiential Education tries to find ways to help the student discover an answer instead of being given an answer and makes learning hands on and relevant to the student's own life. This takes more time and patience, but at the end the student has a real understanding of what they are learning. As long as a student wants to learn, I will do all I can to make learning interesting. As a student at New College of Florida I studied Literature and Sociology before writing an undergraduate thesis on Outdoor Education. During research for my thesis I studied many educational theories and used them for a camping-education program proposal based on Florida educational standards. After graduating, I spent a year in South Carolina teaching outdoor education to elementary school students.

I am a passionate educator with five years of teaching experience ranging from middle school through high school. I have three years of administrative experience in a K-8 program. During my tenure I was responsible for writing curriculum and assisting teachers with implementation. My area of strength is literacy. I am a reading teacher first and know how to effectively diagnosis a child’s reading deficiency and create a plan of action to assist the child to become a better reader. I am fluent in mathematical concepts through Algebra II and have strong creative writing skills. I am a true believer that in order to effectively teach a child you must know the child’s learning style. Some children are visual learners while others are auditory. This method of teaching is essential in the tutoring aspect. I am a practitioner of culturally responsive teaching, which uses the cultural knowledge,

After graduating with my Master’s of Education from the University of Florida in 1996, I began teaching at Emma E. Booker Elementary in Sarasota. I was fortunate to spend my entire teaching career at this school and to be a part of a team that brought the school from a D- rating to a B+ status in the course of a few years. I taught First Grade for the first three years but spent the remaining eight years in the Fourth Grade where I served as Lead Teacher for five years. As the Fourth Grade team leader, our FCAT scores increased consistently, especially in math and writing. I am also a certified New Teacher Mentor, a student intern evaluator, and I have my ESL endorsement. My teaching style would likely be characterized as chiefly direct instruction and coaching followed by teaching. When introducing a new concept, I believe in explicit instruction coupled with examples, non-examples, ba
