I first assess why the student needs private tutoring, and then assess the student's current knowledge of the subject matter, and the student's style of learning. I try from the start to gain the student's confidence and trust, and then request to see the most recent report card or progress report, and the teacher's assignment website, if the student and parents are willing to share these. I then sit with the student and parents to work out a tutoring schedule and long-term tutoring plan. Our common goal is to see progress in the student's school performance. In the case of ACT or SAT prep, the goal is to see progress on practice tests.

Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
