I believe a solid foundation is the key th success.

I began working with pre-k age group as a lead teacher for the four year olds room. After leaving that placement I started working with high school aged students as a substitute. Working with these young adults reinforced my belief that if a student does not have the basic skills learned early in their education, it is very difficult to go back and relearn them. Elementary Math is one of my top subjects! Reading was always my favorite subject; math not so much. I believe strongly children need manipulatives and hands on experiences with math. I wish they had ten frames when I was learning addition and subtraction. I love teaching math in K-2 now and making it concrete vs abstract. I also like relating it to stories that talk about numbers and problems and having children use art to represent their understanding of the story. It's so much fun this way!

I currently have a Florida Teaching Certificate, 17 yrs. teaching in PreK - 2nd grade, and 4 yrs. tutoring. I have always loved being around young children. It was no surprise that I ended up pursuing an Early Childhood Education Bachelor's and Master's Degree. Since I moved to Florida, I have spent time volunteering in Kindergarten classrooms, substituting in K-5 classrooms, and I was even offered an extended subbing position in a Kindergarten classroom. My tutor experience began with a private company for 2 yrs. and now I find my own jobs through Care.com for the last 2 yrs. My comments on tutoring Elementary Math : I love teaching math and believe in using lots of hands on things to help students understand what they are doing. I also believe students neede to memorize the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.

I have enjoyed very much working with children and I know that every student has his own learning style and my teaching must be adapted to them. I am patient, even with children who do not speak fluent English and I seek to encourage them to seek success. I believe a phonics approach to reading can help children learn to read quickly and confidently. I also believe a hands on approach to math can be very valuable to a child's learning. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is what I do. I have found that I have a skill for transferring information to children without them at times even realizing it is happening. I am not a strict disciplinarian but never allowed my classroom to get out of hand even when it was filled with 40+ students. I respect children and their differences. From that attitude I have found that I generally was also respected by most of my students. Teaching is fun.
