A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my experience is working as a Wildlife Biologist for the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Bureau of Reclamation (1973-2006). I worked as a teaching Assistant for Dr. Bender at ASU (1972). I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Science from Northwest Nazarene College (University)and a Master of Science in Zoology from Arizona State University.
I believe in a more visual aspect in learning and teaching. "Hands on" as much as possible. For example, it's easier to learn looking at a mesquite tree than reading about it or looking at a picture of the tree. I try to make learning fun and thrill to the discovery of knowledge. A lot of biology however, is more of a "rote memorization" type of learning. This tends to bore some so I try to make it more real and exciting.

When it comes to helping other students I like to bring to the table a constructive and collaborative approach to solve the problem. In implementing this philosophy, it allows me to engage the students in the discussion and at the same time it challenges them to think critically. I believe this interactive method is very effective and encouraging. Not only does it challenge the students to "think out-side the box", but it also allows me to see where they are stuck in the problem and provide them with feedback. I see teaching as an avenue to share my knowledge and passion for helping others. I consider myself a very patient, confident and understanding person.

I became interested in tutoring and teaching as an undergraduate. I began as a basic chemistry tutor, but quickly worked my way up to a lead tutor position. I then took on the responsibility of being a T.A. in both the chemistry lecture class as well as lab. After graduating college, my career led me on a path of training teachers, developing curriculum for schools and teachers, and finally into the position I am now, as a K-5 Technology Instructor. As such, I have an understanding of chemistry, biology, math, technology, and have extensive grammatical and writing skills and have tutored students in all of these areas.
I feel that my style of teaching is student centered. I am a facilitator to the learning process. Any student who chooses to learn can and will, however some students need more motivation than others. Thus, I take the time to hear about and understand what my ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My Experience: In 1964, I graduated from Columbia College, in Geology. Subsequently, I worked in oil well drilling in Israel, and on a dam project in New Jersey. After earning an MA in Art Education, at Brooklyn College in 1975, I helped found the Waltham Mass. Artists Association, where I created beautiful enamels, and mentored several child students. One of my favorite projects, with friends, was facilitating the creation, exchange, and display of peace and environmental posters, by kids (and adult artists) in the USA and around the world. I also worked for over 20 years as a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher/Naturalist for the Mass. Audubon Society. For several years before I left Mass. in 2006, I also worked as a tutor for Club "Z", "No Child Left Behind", in Math and English, in the "inner city."

I am an excellent tutor and will make sure my students have a thorough and complete understanding of the subject they are struggling in. I have a natural ability to break down and clearly explain the material to my students in a way that they will be able to comprehend and internalize. I believe all children have to ability to learn and master any subject just so long as it is explained to them in a way they can understand; if they are having trouble, the burden falls on the instructor not the student.

I like to mold my teaching style to fit with each individual student. As a teacher of special-needs and emotionally handicapped children, I have learned techniques that make me a formidable teacher in any environment, so long as I am familiar with the material. One of my many passions in life is working with kids, specifically tutoring them. I have found that it is easier to tutor a student when they know that they are surrounded by positivity. With this I am referring to the feeling of comfort and knowing that it's ok to be wrong. I notice more confidence in my students when I establish a friendship with them. In addition to this, letting my students know that even at different ages, we can still relate to one another. I love incorporating visual images, tangible objects, color, laughter, and fun in my tutoring sessions. I strongly believe that repetition is important when learning something new. I have found that every students learning style is different and I have been able to easily adjust to this.

I have always felt very comfortable working with children. I previously worked as an after school teacher at a private middle school and ended up having a great relationship with all the kids. I am easy going and patient and feel myself to be someone that can bring the most out of people.
I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona with a BA in English and a minor in History. I am passionate about writing and creativity in general. Many years of taking upper level English classes have given me much confidence in my paper writing and editing ability. In addition to all of this, I love to write creatively (especially poetry) in my free time.

I'm a very passionate chemist who has experienced various real-world applications of chemistry hands on. My diverse experience on the subject would enable me to share my enthusiasm with anyone eager to learn. As a native Spanish speaker who went through the struggle of learning English as a second language and having taught ESL in Japan to various age groups, I am the ideal candidate for helping someone acquire the language skills they need. During my year in Japan, I worked teaching eight lessons a day. Each lesson was planned to meet the specific needs of my students so that we could target their weaker skills and approach the lesson from their level. I enjoyed seeing my students (aged three years to fifty years old) progress and master the material presented in each lesson. I enjoyed my teaching experience in Japan as much as I have enjoyed many years of teaching Sunday school. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I attended college at three different schools, on athletic scholarship in two of them. I earned two bachelor degrees, BA in Philosophy and BA in Political Science. After graduating I spent one semester teaching sciences at an outdoor based alternative middle and elementary school just outside of Austin, TX. In college and afterwards I have continued to be involved in issues regarding immigration and minorities. I spent one year living and working in the Central Andes in Peru. Part of that job was teaching English to adults and children in their communities. This has given me a high level of fluency in Spanish and an ability to work in crosscultural situations.
I do not believe in hierarchy. I think the teacher-student or tutor-student relationship should be one of equal footing and mutual discovery. This means asking questions together and seeking out the fundamental answers ... read more

As a graduate student at the University of Chicago, I was responsible for leading introductory core Biology labs, which covered an array of concepts in biology, statistics, computer usage, and experimental design. Because lab reports were frequent requirements, I also was able to improve skills as a writing tutor I had already developed as a writing tutor (paid student position) in the Writing Lab at Towson University. I also have taught a remedial study- and life-skills course for students on Academic Probation at the University of Arizona. Finally, in my capacity as Acade ... read more
