I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. As a mom, I've learned to be patient and easy going. As a teacher, I try to find the best approach for individual students. Some of them need more guided practice and examples, while some benefit from independent work.
