Experience Summary
My experience in tutoring is a mix of working with large tutoring agencies as well as local one-on-one at home tutoring services. I have worked with students on elementary school math and reading, as well as SAT and ACT preparation. My greatest experience was when I helped a particular student with her writing skills, not just by drilling and practicing, but by boosting her confidence. With a system of positive reinforcements, we started to build upon her strengths. Her grammar and punctuation have improved vastly, and even her skills in other areas have improved because she is more willing to take risks. Those results were quite rewarding for me, and I realized that I want to help more students break barriers and achieve new limits.
Teaching Style
Studies show that people who are used to success are more likely to try again and again when confronted with a challenge. My goal is to build a success-driven environment where the student feels like he/she can do anything. Of course, I challenge the student as well, but first I make sure they feel confident that they can tackle any obstacle they are confronted with. This method does take a little bit of time, but I have noticed that once that student is motivated through success, their academic improvement tends to improve in more than just one or two subjects. School becomes an opportunity to win, rather than a daily chore, and the student is engaged in learning.
