I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. My teaching experience has been 3 years as a graduate teaching assistant, and 2 years as a tutor to friends and family in science and mathematics. From 2005 to 2008 I worked as a teacher and tutor for a Seattle-based test preparation firm. I taught classes for the SAT and GRE and tutored the SAT, GRE, and ACT. I believe I met and exceeded the high standards set by this organization. A Little Bit About Me...

What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. The cliche saying of "practice makes perfect" does not stray too far from the core of my teaching philosophy, however I do differ on a key point. I believe that practicing anything (whether or not it relates to academics) can only be done successfully if certain foundational skills are present; just as a baseball player, regardless of inherent talent, will fail if they do not know how to hold a bat correctly, so will an English student fail, regardless of the inherent quality of their thought processes, if they do not understand how to properly structure an essay.
