Experience Summary
From 2005 to 2008 I worked as a teacher and tutor for a Seattle-based test preparation firm. I taught classes for the SAT and GRE and tutored the SAT, GRE, and ACT. I believe I met and exceeded the high standards set by this organization. In 2008 I worked as a regional field director for the Obama campaign in several states, leading trainings in voter contact activities, campaign software systems, and other volunteer activities. Training volunteers of all different backgrounds and educational levels was the key to my task.
Teaching Style
I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. Frustration is the primary obstacle to successful learning and overcoming it is the instructor’s chief task.
