Sherian V - Middlesex, VT 05602 (9.8 mi) - High School Poetry Tutor - $38.00/hr.
I have a BA in English with a minor in history and have worked as a freelance copywriter and indexer. As the mother of both a teenage son and a daughter, an occasional substitute teacher, and as a long-time Girl Scout leader, I have had the pleasure of working with children of diverse ages and personalities in a variety of situations. My resulting teaching experience has varied from the purely academic to the hands-on. I have assisted younger students in reading and reading comprehension, and older students in essay writing and research techniques. I have also had extensive experience in writing and editing, and have tutored college students in English literature and essay writing. I am very relaxed around children, and I try to create a patient and encouraging learning environment. I will often answer a question with a question in order to teach students to approach subjects with i

William C - Burlington, VT 05401 (23.1 mi) - High School Poetry Tutor - $37.00/hr.
In college, I worked not only to achieve personal academic excellence, but also to help my fellow students attain their academic goals as well. I was a double major, receiving my BA in English and History, and also worked as a mentor and tutor in the college’s Writing Center. I helped students learn to express themselves in writing, combining an emphasis on proper grammar with the recognition of each writer’s individual voice. I tutored students of many fields, including Chemistry and Biology. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for a freshman Computer Science class my junior and senior years. Working as a TA taught me how to evaluate students and how to work with them to improve upon assignments. For students to succeed, they need to be able to have open and respectful communication between themselves and their teacher. Each student brings to a tutoring session or a classroom his or h

Charles H - Burlington, VT 05401 (24.4 mi) - High School Poetry Tutor - $39.50/hr.
I am a recent graduate of Fordham University, where I majored in Film Studies and minored in Visual Arts. During my time there I honed my skills in painting, graphic design, filmmaking and writing (both creative and academic). Recently I worked with the Tribeca Film Institute on the Tribeca Teaches program, coordinating the in class production of seven short documentaries made by middle and high school students in the South Bronx and Brooklyn that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Last summer, I worked at the West Side Y in New York City as the program coordinator for Summer Arts Camp, where I worked with children from the ages of 6 to 13 in writing producing and performing a musical based on “Where the Wild Things Are.” With every student I’ve worked with I’ve found that the key to truly appreciating the creative joys of art (whether it be writing, drama, film or painting) is to m

I like explain the problem to the students and then let them work on few problems on their own. I would then correct the problems that the students were working on and ask if they need any questions. If the students have questions or if they did not get the right answer I would then go over the problems together with the students and have them practice until they have the strategy down. I have been working for a local High School for 3 years now as an instructional assistant. Currently I have 3 math classes. I have 2 pre-algebra classes and one geometry. I basically help students mostly 1:6. I have 8 math students that I work with. This summer I also thought math for the students that have failed classes or that were skipping classes and needed to make up the credit. I have BA in English/American Literature. I speak English and Bosnian(native). I also have taken all the education classes

How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. That led to my doing teaching seminars, which led to consulting, which led to training, which led to my working with individuals as a life coach. I have been a CEO, Vice President, Consultant, Senior Broker, Artist, Photographer, Glass Blower, Jewelry Designer and writer, the job titles have changed over the years; the only consistent has been that teaching has always been a part of my working life. I fundamentally believe anyone can learn. If a student isn’t grasping a concept, it just means I have to change my style of teaching. So what is my teaching style…anything that helps a student achieve his or h

My career in education includes a wide range of experience. I began as a substitute teacher covering for classroom teachers ranging from preschool to the 12th grade. During this time, I successfully tutored many students in language arts, math and social studies. Due to my background and experience in behavorial science, my warm personality and sense of humor, students quickly learn to trust me; thus the learning begins. I am a driven life-long learner who achieves high levels of success in life. I focus on excellence in all I do. I have a well-rounded education. My experience has led me to expertise in teaching math, psychology, English and history. I have worked with students from Kindergarten to adult age. At the high school level, preparation for transition to college, training or work has been an additional area that I have provided expertise. Having worked with young children through college students and adults, I can teach a variety of ages and make the material applicable to the student's skill-level. I am a patient teacher with expectations for effort. All students can learn but may learn differently. I am able to adapt material to the student's learning style. I have seen the difference education can make and am a life-long learner, myself.

No two children are the same, and we know that this is correct, so therefore it applies to their learning ability as well. Some children need visual simulation to really ingrain the principle that is trying to be understood. While other's learn by complete repetition. My teaching style is all relative to the child and the subject area being covered. As an average person, I enjoy teaching children the values and importance of their education while befriending them and understanding where they are in relation to their social-emotional, physical, and educational development.

Kathryn W - Montgomery Center, VT 05471 (41.6 mi) - High School Poetry Tutor - $36.50/hr.
In the process of earning my BA in History (minor in Archaeology), I became familiar with a broad range of historical subjects. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation. It is widely acknowledged that students learn in a variety of ways. In a tutoring environment, I believe in discovering each student’s optimal learning strategy, as well as identifying techniques for making other styles of teaching accessible. I aim to enable further education, as well as transmit more urgently needed information.

James E - Barton, VT 05822 (45.9 mi) - High School Poetry Tutor - $37.00/hr.
I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State.
