Experience Summary
I have a BA in English with a minor in history and have worked as a freelance copywriter and indexer. As the mother of both a teenage son and a daughter, an occasional substitute teacher, and as a long-time Girl Scout leader, I have had the pleasure of working with children of diverse ages and personalities in a variety of situations. My resulting teaching experience has varied from the purely academic to the hands-on. I have assisted younger students in reading and reading comprehension, and older students in essay writing and research techniques. I have also had extensive experience in writing and editing, and have tutored college students in English literature and essay writing.
Teaching Style
I am very relaxed around children, and I try to create a patient and encouraging learning environment. I will often answer a question with a question in order to teach students to approach subjects with inquisitiveness and reason. When this approach is not appropriate to the question being asked, I encourage logical thinking, taking the question and its answer step-by-step to their rational conclusion. Additionally, because my love of literature is supported by my interest in history, I try to present ideas across disciplines whenever possible to give a more complete picture. In this way, I strive to empower students to think clearly, organize their ideas rationally, and express themselves effectively.
