Experience Summary
In college, I worked not only to achieve personal academic excellence, but also to help my fellow students attain their academic goals as well. I was a double major, receiving my BA in English and History, and also worked as a mentor and tutor in the college’s Writing Center. I helped students learn to express themselves in writing, combining an emphasis on proper grammar with the recognition of each writer’s individual voice. I tutored students of many fields, including Chemistry and Biology. I also worked as a Teaching Assistant for a freshman Computer Science class my junior and senior years. Working as a TA taught me how to evaluate students and how to work with them to improve upon assignments.
Teaching Style
For students to succeed, they need to be able to have open and respectful communication between themselves and their teacher. Each student brings to a tutoring session or a classroom his or her own self-knowledge about how he or she best learns, and in my teaching I always strive to draw this information out. I work to find those aspects of a subject that are going to cause a particular challenge for a student and those aspects that will come more easily. I believe that in situations where students find themselves comfortable and listened to, I can get a far better grasp of the needs of the individual student, which in turn will lead to more successful learning.
