I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

From teaching preschoolers how to read to teaching high school students how to survive (and enjoy!) Algebra, I find it rewarding to discover how individual students learn and then help them to succeed in their efforts. I love kids and am able to relate to different age levels and needs. I understand that every child learns differently and has unique strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to be able to teach children fundamental concepts that translate into solving specific problems. For example, I teach phonics as a base for reading so that students are able to use the concepts they have learned to sound out new words. In math courses, I not only aid in completing particular equations, but I also make sure the student understands the principles and applies them in other situations. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. Along the way, I also experienced fulltime day teaching of a kindergarten class in Fresno and a combined 7th-8th grade moderate-to-severe special education class in Inglewood, California.
My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual. A Little Bit About Me...

Each time I have taught a different age-level I have sought to accommodate myself to the learning style of that particular level, whether psychokinetic for kindergarten and preschool, audio-visual for lower elementary, or verbal-phonemic for upper-level students and adults. It was in the teaching of adults that I encountered my most challenging situations, and even today the pedagogy is not nearly as simple as would appear at face-value. Reference to Ken Pike's tomes on the fundamentals of tagmemics, James Stanfield's affective pointers for students of various emotional statuses, and even the philosophy of Noam Chomsky on English deep structure, were all consulted early and often and at one time or another throughout my career.
