I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

I have seven years’ experience teaching elementary school, where I have taught many children the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic. A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. Along the way, I also experienced fulltime day teaching of a kindergarten class in Fresno and a combined 7th-8th grade moderate-to-severe special education class in Inglewood, California.
My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual.
