My comments on tutoring Elementary Phonics : Phonics has been very helpful teaching reading especially with ESL students.

My teaching style, when engaged in one on one tutoring is very individualized. I used the student's personality and interests to design my teaching style. I love tutoring because I can teach to a student's interests and personality and establish a love for learning in most of my students.
Denver Summer Scholars - Lead computer tutor - Taught 3 classes a day with 15 students in each class. I used computer software to tutor students in math and language arts. I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.
