Been playing chess as a favorite pastime for about 16 years. I once started my own chess club in high school and wish to see the game continue to thrive. Have access to tournaments and wish to start a society for the game that can compete. I started playing chess with my father when I was 7 and have been playing my entire life since. I grew up losing time and time again but I refused to give up on the game. I sought individuals with much more experience than me until one day, I started winning! I took on more challenging endeavors time after time and continually sought more and more challenging players to increase my expertise. Now it has been almost two years and I am waiting to lose, so my offer to teach chess isn't based upon credentials or tangible evidence of my expertise, but is just as much a search for a challenging player as it is a learning experience for my students. My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material. I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students.
