I have always worked with children. I have been a part of many volunteer projects surrounding children as well as direct related jobs. I have worked with children with various learning abilities and overall capabilities. I believe it is important for children to have someone to help them understand their educational tasks. I am patient and organized and feel that children can benefit from having someone explain their coursework one and one and creating various hands on experiments to able their learning. Throughout my coursework I have found that I learn better creating tricks and games to help me learn and feel that some children may benefit from this learning style but am willing to help children find what works best for them. I have earned my bachelor degree in Marine Science with a concentration in Marine Biology. I have always had a passion for the sciences and always knew I wanted

I've always loved to read, I inhereited it from my father who got it from his father. I'm an avid writer as well. I currently write book reviews for The San Francisco Book Review and the San Diego Book Review. You'll find samples of my work at http://www.thereadingcan.blogspot.com . I really feel I can help youth and young adults learn to read. Currently I work with individuals who have disabilities to find and maintain work. I would like to help youth and young adults with disabilities learn to read as well. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

I served in the Straight Up AmeriCorps as a member for two years, specializing in tutoring and mentoring in a high school setting. I was responsible for teaching and leading programs for students as well as organizing events. Once completed, I was hired by a local non-profit to administer services and manage a Family Literacy program for 20 families. My duties included direct mentoring and tutoring, as well as identifying and implementing learning programs based on each individuals needs. Since then, I have also started my own Event Planning business which showcases my customer service and strong oral, written, and time management skills. I am a strong believer in leading by example. When given a task, I fulfill it to the best of my abilities, taking responsibility for it's completion and encourage those around me to do the same. As opposed to criticizing, I focus on the positive aspects

I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty. Being empathetic to their struggles helps to overcome them. My experience has been that most who struggle with it do pretty well with math if they make the effort. I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State.

The majority of my experience lies within the field of Human Services/Counseling. However, I have substitute taught for about 18 months, elementary level and high school level. In addition, I have tutored foreign languages on a college level for two semesters. I have always enjoyed teaching. I try to take into consideration the individual's learning style when teaching. Many kids learn best when a "hands on" approach is incorporated into the lecture or instruction. I am laid back, patient, have a good sense of humor, and have never had difficulties connecting with youth of all ages. Sometimes, I have used creative ways to teach. I feel it is important to hold the interest of a student and ignite a childs' natural curiosity.

After receiving my BA in Math Education, I spent four years in aerospace engineering before beginning my career in teaching. I taught high school math for 3 years in a private school in the US then 2 years in a public school in an urban setting in Africa, where I adapted to teaching in another culture and language. After returning to the US, I taught evening college math courses as an adjunct for 9 years as well as tutoring in the drop-in center and by private arrangement. My special focus topics have been statistics, developmental math and algebra, and calculus. I have only worked with students at the 8th grade level through adult, but have been able to engage students at every level of ability. I seek to understand each student's strengths and weaknesses, as well as his or her most beneficial learning styles, and to use those styles to develop the weak areas while capitalizing on t

As a Business Consultant over the past 20 years I have taught computer and business applications to over 50 business employees. I have extensive experience in fund accounting and grant administration. While in college I tutored finite and basic math in a work study program. I have found that I have a unique ability to teach students who have learning disabilities. I have the ability to read how a student learns and change to their abilities. I began my college education majoring in Special Education and changed to Business later when I realized I was suited for one on one teaching. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in questio

My scholastic work includes a PhD in Mathematics and a MS in Electrical Engineering. I have taught and done research in mathematics for over 30 years and have tutored students at the high school and college level during the same period, as well as mentoring them in research projects. One of the more enjoyable aspects of my career was working with students in one-on-one tutoring situations. This extensive experience has helped me develop my Socratic tutoring method, described below. My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or hi

One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. The process leads the student to the discovery of concepts based on practical demonstrations by the educator with as much repetition as necessary for the student to achieve comfortable mastery. My best contribution has always been coupled with my crossover between practical, "real-world", skills and academics. I have always had a desire to share things that interested me with others, starting with Karate as a teen and continuing onward through

I have been working as a para-educator for the past 8 years. I greatly enjoy my work. I have worked with students with disabilities that range form mild learning disabilities to sever, such as autism. I love watching their faces light up when they grasp the concept of what they are trying to learn. I have taken classes at Community College of Vermont towards earning my associates degree in elementary education. I have also taken classroom behaior and management classes and earned certificates for those. My GPA at Community College of VT has never been below 3.8. I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. After learning each letter and its sound children can tap out each sound to figure out a word. There are trick words like: the, was, of...etc that we use flash cards for
