Experience Summary
After receiving my BA in Math Education, I spent four years in aerospace engineering before beginning my career in teaching. I taught high school math for 3 years in a private school in the US then 2 years in a public school in an urban setting in Africa, where I adapted to teaching in another culture and language. After returning to the US, I taught evening college math courses as an adjunct for 9 years as well as tutoring in the drop-in center and by private arrangement. My special focus topics have been statistics, developmental math and algebra, and calculus.
Teaching Style
I have only worked with students at the 8th grade level through adult, but have been able to engage students at every level of ability. I seek to understand each student's strengths and weaknesses, as well as his or her most beneficial learning styles, and to use those styles to develop the weak areas while capitalizing on the strengths. I am very patient and have a strong ability to explain different approaches to understanding concepts. My goal is not to help the student solve a math problem, but to enable the student to grasp the entire concept, as well as to appreciate the concepts and methods in the context of logical thinking and progression. A successful student is one who not only knows how to "do math", but can exercise the same concrete and abstract thinking processes in real life problem solving.
