I had two very different teaching experiences in my last semester at ASU. The first was teaching an upper-division psychology course to fellow undergrads. I had a group of 5 students that I was responsible for leading in class discussion, providing feedback on all coursework, as well as any help they needed understanding or applying the concepts. The second was acting as a tutor/mentor for students in an elementary school. I had two students with whom I spent 2 hours after school with twice a week. I planned and created fun, academically-oriented activities for these students that were tailored to meet each of their individual needs and interests. I found both experiences to be extremely rewarding. After earning a bachelor's degreee in Psychology and receiving my Elementary Education certification at Gonzaga University in 2007, I worked at Mario Umana Middle School Academy teaching environmental education in Boston. I currently work as a teacher's assistant in a Supported Learning Center program for students with Asperger’s Syndrome. I work one-on-one with high school students in the program, assisting them with work in math, science, English and social studies. Additionally, when I was in high school, I worked as a math tutor for algebra students. I love to listen to what kids have to say. My teaching style is to ask a lot of questions in the attempt to get the kids to give the answers back to me. I think that it is more powerful for kids to come up with the answers themselves than to regurgitate what I have told them. I try to ask leading questions and get kids interested in the subjects that they are being taught, using teachable moments to play off of things that they are already excited about. I think that patience and giving them choices and opportunities to teach help empower children and give them a drive to learn.
I grew up as a member of CampFire boys and girls, now CampFire USA, and have been attending and working at their summer camps for the last 18 years of my life. I enjoy working with children, young adults, and adults. Teaching others in any way is beneficial for them and in the long run for me. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters.
