I had two very different teaching experiences in my last semester at ASU. The first was teaching an upper-division psychology course to fellow undergrads. I had a group of 5 students that I was responsible for leading in class discussion, providing feedback on all coursework, as well as any help they needed understanding or applying the concepts. The second was acting as a tutor/mentor for students in an elementary school. I had two students with whom I spent 2 hours after school with twice a week. I planned and created fun, academically-oriented activities for these students that were tailored to meet each of their individual needs and interests. I found both experiences to be extremely rewarding. Upon my graduation from high school, my calculus teacher, who had noticed my natural aptitude for mathematics and my ability to help other students to understand it, referred some younger students who had been struggling to me for tutoring. Due to my success with this first student, or rather, the student’s new found success in his math courses, my former teacher referred another student to me the following summer. In subsequent years, while I was pursuing my education, many friends and fellow students, asked me to tutor them in various topics ranging from college algebra, to statistics, to calculus. I have completed the most advanced mathematics and physics courses offered to undergraduates at the University of Michigan.

Although I have taught in a regular classroom setting, I have found that I am most successful working one-on-one with students. I love that in tutoring I can push students to understand their gifts and thus achieve their full academic potential. I love to listen to what kids have to say. My teaching style is to ask a lot of questions in the attempt to get the kids to give the answers back to me. I think that it is more powerful for kids to come up with the answers themselves than to regurgitate what I have told them. I try to ask leading questions and get kids interested in the subjects that they are being taught, using teachable moments to play off of things that they are already excited about. I think that patience and giving them choices and opportunities to teach help empower children and give them a drive to learn.
I grew up as a member of CampFire boys and girls, now CampFire USA, and have been attending and working at their summer camps for the last 18 years of my life. A Little Bit About Me...

I returned to school part time in 1998 to work on a degree in physics. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids. I have wide experience and interests in both math and science. I've also taught undergraduate physics classes, substitute taught K-12, and tutored in a number of different situations.
