I am passionate about tutoring. I have been tutoring formally and informally since I started college. I have done group and one-on-one tutoring for college students, international students, and high school students in chemistry, math, English, biology, and other subjects. I have taught high school Oceanography, Chemistry, and Biology. I have also taught Junior High technology. A Little Bit About Me...

The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. In all cases, I create a relationship with my students in which they can feel comfortable being honest and open with me. Positive reinforcement is the key.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently earned my physics degree. I am taking a few classes at NAU during the spring semester. I have tutored for a semester during my senior year of high school, and have been a physics and mathematics tutor at NAU since January 2009. I have a very strong background tutoring Calculus.
I believe in teaching through example. With both physics and mathematics examples are key to develop understanding of theorems and proofs. I help students work through examples and and am able to create a variety of problems through previous experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate with a B.S. in physics and a B.S. in Chemistry, earning a 3.98 GPA and Summa Cum-Laude recognition while completing the Honors Liberal Studies program in obtaining both degrees at Northern Arizona University, I believe I have thoroughly learned the subjects of physics and chemistry, as well as math (as higher level math is required for physics). In addition to my education, I have tutored for one and a half years at the Learning Assistance Center at Northern Arizona University. I love to listen to what kids have to say. My teaching style is to ask a lot of questions in the attempt to get the kids to give the answers back to me. I think that it is more powerful for kids to come up with the answers themselves than to regurgitate what I have told them. I try to ask leading questions and get kids interested in the subjects that they are being taught, using teachable moments to play off of things that they are already excited about. I think that patience and giving them choices and opportunities to teach help empower children and give them a drive to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

I returned to school part time in 1998 to work on a degree in physics. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids.
