I earned a BA in Music from the University of California, Los Angeles where I also completed a post-graduate year required for a California life-time teaching credential. I am an experienced classroom teacher (3rd/4th LA City Schools and Casablanca, Morocco) as well as music specialist (LA City Schools) and piano teacher (California/Colorado). I also have solid work experience as an administrative assistant with Hewlett-Packard and later as an Information Technology II employee at Colorado State University. I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.
My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. I am a retired Boulder valley teacher and I have taught from the preschool to college level for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked as an ESL and reading teacher. My training was modeled after reading recovery and involved one year of supervised teaching one-on-one with children who were struggling readers. The goal of this training is to help children work with their strengths as readers, rather than focusing on their weaknesses.
