I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.

During my three years of formal tutoring, I was able to change my tutoring styles to fit the needs of the student. Everyone learns differently and it is important to realize and adjust my tutoring accordingly.
During the last three years of my undergraduate college career, I was a Mathematics tutor for student athletes. Although the courses covered while tutoring ranged from basic math to calculus, I am more comfotable tutoring algebra and geometry. I earned my BA with a double major in Mathematics and Russian in just four years. After college, I helped my sister and step-sister with their math and math-related physcis problems.

In my past I have taught many years as a tennis instructor and ski instructor. I also taught at a Federal correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado in their Education Department in 1990 and 1991. i tutored inmates for their 8th grade equivalency as well as several others through their GED's. In 2002 through 2004 I also was the training officer for Star West Aviation. My teaching style was, and always has been to use humor and patience to bring my students along and to achieve where they had failed in the past. I found, especially in the prison system, that people achieve best when you make the work interesting and also within the student's ability. No one wants to feel stupid and there is always a tremendous joy in even grown adults when they "get it."
