Florida Writes Tutoring

The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive). Florida Writes is difficult for some students. Give your child an edge by selecting a tutor today on your terms, on your schedule, to suit your needs and within budget.

I enjoy teaching and observing my students' different learning styles. I respect each student's individual method of assimilation. I work hard to accommodate his or her particular needs. I delight in the dynamics of the classroom and strongly believe that I can make a difference in whether the student becomes engaged in the learning process. I place a high value on formal education and believe strongly in lifelong learning, for the betterment of the individual and, ultimately, for society. While raising three young children, I obtained my undergraduate degree in business administration. In later acquiring a law degree, I was introduced to the rigorous demands of such study and to the fascinating arena of reasoning and analytical thinking required by this discipline. I have tutored young children intermittenly over several years, with one stint of four years length as a Literacy Voluntee ... read more

My teaching philosophy and style is founded upon the belief that all children are brilliant and can succeed. My approach to teaching is highly individualized and targeted to meet a student's specific needs. If your child is struggling, I believe in figuring out the root of the problem, boredom, trouble reading or note-taking, learning style, and then finding strategies that address that difficulty directly. In teaching, I am patient, motivated, and fun. I like to make whatever I'm teaching come alive for the student. I want my students to understand that learning is a life-long process where they can explore the world; not something they are forced to do, but something that they get to do. So let's have some fun with it. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in History and English, as well as a master’s degree in teaching. My educational background has given me a wide range of knowledge in t

I have twelve years experience teaching students from 2nd to 5th grade. My first six years were spent teaching 2nd grade at Caroline Brevard and Florida State University Schools. Then, I taught Math to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade for one year at FSU Schools using the Project CHILD method which involved many hands on centers with whole group and small group instruction. After that, I was a Reading Coach for Crawfordville Elementary for one year and then taught 4th grade for three years. I currently work at Riversink Elementary teaching 3rd grade. I have worked there since they opened in the fall of 2007. As an Elementary teacher I have experience teaching Reading, Writing, Grammar, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. When I teach children I first look to see where they have the most need. I use a variety of assessments and tools to identify their areas of weakness and then plan activiti

Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. Flashcards work well for some while others have difficulty remembering things. It all depends on the strengths of that child as to what is the best way to teach. I have taught kindergarten through eighth grade special education for the last twenty years. I have had experience working with students who were struggling learners including my own child. Sometimes teaching means showing a different way to do it. I have learned the skills needed for students to learn and remember what they have learned. I have tutored many students and a

I am a very patient, soft spoken person who understands what it is like to struggle. I also had difficulty learning in school and wish someone would have taken the time to notice I wasn't being 'lazy' but really had a hard time comprehending and remembering what I read. Study habits need to be taught. Learning can be an adventure when you are feeling successful but when you are meeting failure, it is difficult. I try to teach the subject area while teaching strategies for lifetime learning. As a special needs teacher, I have worked with many students who simply needed someone to show them a different way to learn the material. Learning can be made so much easier when taught in a format that is fun. This makes it enjoyable and more likely to be remembered. In a tutoring one-on-one kind of setting, times tables could be taught with a deck of cards and using the two numbers thrown ou

As a college graduate I understand the importance of education. During my college career I was given the opportunity to travel to Darmstadt, Germany where I was a camp counselor to children's whose parents are in the military. During this time I was given the opportunity to tutor and mentor young military children. It was my goal to help each student understand the fundamentals of reading and writing. As a pre law student, I was able to strengthen my research and writing skills. I interned at the Florida Legislature and a law office. Reading and writing is my passion and I would love to help others foster that same love. Understanding is a priceless gift. It is my ultimate goal to ensure that every student I help gets an understanding of what they are learning. I believe that my patience coupled with my desire to see a student succeed is what drives me to teach and mentor. I am confident

I successfully completed a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Social Work and a master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Behavioral Science and Health Education. I have tutored previous college classmates and K-12 students in English, Speech, Reading, Writing and Math for the last 4-5 years. When working as a graduate assistant for the University of Florida, I assisted in training undergraduate students in speech, presentation, math and writing skills. Also, for the last three years I have mentored and tutored two tenth grade students in whichever subject they need help in. Although I absolutely love working with kids, I have tutored all ages from elementary thru graduate level students. I've been told that I have a unique style of teaching. I like to teach using rhymes, antonyms, and relating the subject to familiar life situations. My experience with this s

I graduated from Florida State University in 2004 with a B.A. in Spanish and Italian with a minor in French. I have been tutoring with the Modern Language Department since 2001 and tutor in all three languages. I also spent a month in Spain teaching English to native Spanish speakers. As an undergraduate, I was involved with the America Reads program, where I was a reading coach/language arts tutor to elementary and middle school children. I am also qualified in tutoring basic math and college prep math. As a teacher/tutor, I find that being a good listener and paying attention to students needs creates a successful learning environment. Every child acquires information differently and their ways of learning should be respected. By creating lessons based on exciting, "real world" applications, students are more accepting to the content at hand.

While passing the FCAT is obviously one component of improving your child’s skills, this class is focused on going beyond what is expected by the FCAT. I want to encourage creative expression through different styles of writing, and I want them to develop a love for reading, or at least find a few books that they absolutely can’t stop reading. To engage students in the books they are reading, I will incorporate hands-on activities throughout the reading. These activities will help them become active readers, while engaging them in the stories. Each semester, the students will do a book report on a book they must be reading at home, independently of class time. They will have the opportunity to choose their own book for the book report, as long as it is slightly above their reading level. During my ten-week internship at the middle school, I had five classes of sixth grade advanced read

I was a teacher for a year in the 2007-2008 school year. I taught grades 3-5 and most of my students were labeled with Specific Learning Disabilities. For the past two years I have worked as a Speech and Language therapist between two special centers for students with Emotional Behavior Disorders. While providing therapy I would work on Reading, Language and Grammar skills. I also have experience tutoring for the past year. I really like individualized teaching and prefer to work in small groups or one-on-one. I believe in providing multiple teaching methods to include all learning styles. I do my best to make my lessons relatable and enjoyable. I feel very comfortable around all sorts of students, especially those with disabilities. I am very friendly and patient. I really enjoy teaching children and I find it to be extremely rewarding.

The teachers who continue to influence me and affect my day-to-day life are those who had a genuine passion for teaching and a contagious love for their subject. They were the best teachers, not only because they possessed the necessary knowledge, but because they were animated and caring and able to cater to students' needs. I believe all children can be made to see the benefits of education through the right teaching methods. If there is anything I do not know, I am able to research and learn about it independently. The most memorable teachers did not always know the answer, but they always knew where to find it or how to help the students find it. I take these lessons to heart and hope to use them to help others. I have always found myself adept at teaching. I have a great deal of patience and a genuine fondness for instruction. I believe that to engage and educate children requires a personal, hands-on, and creative teaching style. I recognize that everyone learns differently. However, I believe that a child can learn anything if he/she sees the connection between the information and their daily life. I am patient and open-minded. I don't mind working hard for results. The best way to cover information is by showing all sides of it. I believe in developing trust within the teacher-student relationship. I try to make the learning environment as comfortable and relaxed as possible. My experience with children and education are linked through my travels. I worked in a day care in Asheville North Carolina. I also volunteered at a mosque when I lived in London. I visited many schools when I went to Morocco. I am a student at Florida State University, working for a double-major in Creative Writing and Middle Easter

I come from a public school background with an emphasis in higher learning and was twice selected as an AP Scholar with Honors for my work in the AP program. I am currently in the process of earning a Bachelors of Science in English Education with an emphasis in theatre. My strength in is in the knowledge of my area content, since I have spent 4 years taking courses in a variety of literature, grammar, and writing courses as well as a variety of courses on history and economics. I have also served as a tutor to roughly 100 plus students in the University Housing system at Floria State University. I believe that every student can learn if I can adequately gauge what their abilities and intelligences are. Utilizing the multiple intelligences theory, my first session with my student will be concentrating on getting to know them as a worker and a person. I feel their outside experiences have

My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. I am a very patient person, and most of all, I consider myself empathetic. I believe that teaching is achieved through understanding each child's specific needs and emotions, and working through the difficulties with firm, but kind leadership. I earned my bachelor degree in Communications and Creative Writing (double major), which has attributed to my excellent verbal communication skills as well
