A Little Bit About Me...

I have taken teaching as my profession. As a parent I love to help the young ones achieve their goals. I feel delighted when I see my students excel in life. Science, and especially Mathematics, is not as difficult as some people think; it is just a matter of getting the fundamentals. Here presentation of these fundamentals is very important.
After high school, I went to a teacher training college and graduated after three years. I was a Mathematics and Science teacher for 7 years before I went to Canada for my B.Sc. in Physics. I then went to Howard University where I did my Master of Engineering in Civil (Environmental) Engineering and later my Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at Ahmadu Bello University. When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their favorite subjects) to try to encourage them to speak freely with me about what they're thinking. Then, after personal rapport is established, I begin my academic approach to tutoring by finding out how they think based on their interests or common themes, and I try to connect the material to these things. Children have trouble learning, often because the addressed concepts don't relate to their lives. Tutoring is a one on one situation where I don't believe teaching style, as defined by the approach used in the class room, plays a role. Each individual learns differently, and the tutor needs to learn how to reach each of his pupils. The most important task a tutor needs to address is how to help students become self-learners. Knowledge is something you learn yourself, no one can pour it into your head. An open mind is necessary, and negative thoughts about the material and poor self-confidence are distructive. The tutor must attempt to show relevance in the subject matter, and acknowledge that weak algebra skills in solving word problems often underlie the difficulties in working problems in chemistry and physics.
