Tutoring is a one on one situation where I don't believe teaching style, as defined by the approach used in the class room, plays a role. Each individual learns differently, and the tutor needs to learn how to reach each of his pupils. The most important task a tutor needs to address is how to help students become self-learners. Knowledge is something you learn yourself, no one can pour it into your head. An open mind is necessary, and negative thoughts about the material and poor self-confidence are distructive. The tutor must attempt to show relevance in the subject matter, and acknowledge that weak algebra skills in solving word problems often underlie the difficulties in working problems in chemistry and physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

While in high school, I tutored another student for several months. On the California Achievement Test in Advanced Mathematics my score was 800. This qualified me for the advanced calculus course. In the third year of the course, things changed. We started from scratch, and learned point set topology as the basis for calculus. In the following two weeks, we proved half the theorems from the previous two years. While working for U.C. Davis, I volunteered to teach a course on computer programming, to eighth graders. While on the staff of Duke University, I taught classes on how to use computers. During my several decades of employment, I have often needed both to teach, and to learn from, my peers.
