During my doctoral studies at UCSD, I began to tutor professionally as a way to earn extra income. It seemed like a logical choice for a part-time job as I had been helping friends with homework for almost as long as I could remember. Given my extensive scientific training, the vast majority of my tutoring experience has been in Science or Math. However, I would be able to tutor other subjects, such as English and Psychology as well.
As a tutor, I try to identify the learning strategies of my students and then build off of those. I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. At Duke I tutored during each of my four years, either biweekly at a local Durham elementary school or at the Emily K Family Life Center.
