I believe that all children can learn and all children are capable of learning. But, all students learn differently, so, I feel that by changing lessons and incorporating different things into each one to accomodate most, or all, students is necessary. When children are able to learn and gain experiences on their own, with little or no teacher intervention, they learn at their best. By doing fun activities, children are able to gain and retain knowledge better. After graduation, I taught for four years in the California public school system, one year of a third/fourth grade combo class and another three years of third grade. I then moved to Central Asia and spent a year homeschooling the children of an American family who lived there. After graduating from North Carolina State University, I began to apply and share the value of learning and education with my community. I began 'teaching' as the head wakeboarding instructor at Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC, when I was a junior in high school. Shortly thereafter I took a position working at a beach resort in Pensacola, FL, where I spent an entire summer instructing surfing, kayaking and sailing. Rather than tell the student the answer, I find a way to allow the student to discover the answer him or herself. One way how I do this is by asking the pupil smaller leading questions in order to put the pieces of the bigger picture together. Tutoring is a one on one situation where I don't believe teaching style, as defined by the approach used in the class room, plays a role. Each individual learns differently, and the tutor needs to learn how to reach each of his pupils. The most important task a tutor needs to address is how to help students become self-learners. Knowledge is something you learn yourself, no one can pour it into your head. An open mind is necessary, and negative thoughts about the material and poor self-confidence are distructive.
