When I teach, I try my best to be open minded, and to give choices to the student, rather than follow a closed-box cookie cutter curriculum. I've found it's important to find a personal way of learning for a specific student. Variety is important, because every child learns a little differently. Some kids learn by listening, others by seeing. Some kids learn only when they're making things. Encouragement and recognition when progress is attained by the student is a great incentive.
I'm currently a student in school who has had a wide range of experience in various different subjects, specifically working best with mathematics, science and language arts in the elementary and middle school level. High school counselors steered me toward math and sciences. During my thirty years as an elementary teacher I taught third grade with the exception of second grade and fourth grade for one year each. After retiring my school district hired me to attend workshops on writing skills, then had me work with several elementary schools' at-risk students to boost their basic report and story writing skills.
