As the Title I Math Specialist at Peyton Elementary for three years, I had the opportunity to work with struggling learners as well as high achieving students in a small classroom setting. This on-the-job experience combined with numerous professional development credits earned in various areas such as differentiated instruction, math/literature connections, and mathematics pedagogy as well as two years of service on Peyton Elementary's "Child Study" team gave me the necessary background to be able to identify individual student needs and tailor lessons to address those needs. Over the past two years, I have been able to apply the above skills in a one-on-one setting through private tutoring of elementary age students in both math and reading.

From the time I was in 4th grade, I have always had a strong passion to teach our young people and assist in developing the next generation that will run this country. Being deeply inspired by multiple teachers throughout my schooling, I too have wanted to make the same type of impact on children. Good teachers are the ones who wake up everyday excited to expand young minds and challenge them to strive for their potential. Seeing that "light bulb" go off when a child learns something that they have struggled with is one of the greatest joys in life. Every child deserves a chance to learn in a safe and encouraging environment; I believe in providing this through individual interactions with each one.
I have always wanted to teach. While in high school, I spent half of my school day being a teacher's assistance at an elementary school. I started my college experience at Adams State C ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a classroom teacher I quickly learned to engage each student individually. I prefer tutoring because I can tailor my instruction to a specific student. Children have different learning styles so it is my responsibility as the instructor to adapt lessons to maximize learning for each child. Ideally I am able to guide a student to realize concepts in their own terms rather then dictate facts to them.
I recently completed two years of teaching Physical Science in a secondary school in Namibia as a Peace Corps volunteer. Prior to that I earned a BS in Computer Science which included a mathematics minor and courses in physics and chemistry. I tutored throughout my time in the Peace Corps, my undergraduate studies and my high school years.

Teaching is a career I have always been drawn to. I enjoy educating children and showing them various ways to create a solution. As a kindergarten, it is such an amazing feeling to teach a child to read for the first time. My main goal is to provide children with the best materials and strategies to obtain mastery in all content areas. I strongly believe in teaching with direct instruction; however, I am able and more than willing to differentiate my delivery of instruction and materials based upon each child's individual needs. I would define myself as detail-oriented, patient, kind, flexible, and warm-hearted. My mission is to inspire a love of education in every child despite any circumstances, which I will achieve by dedicating myself to excellence and mastery and keeping the standard of excellence set high.

Every person is different and requires a unique style for learning. I have used many different styles in my experiences, and I tend to use the one that works the best for that individual. Some are visual learners while others need to learn by trial and error. I am easy going, flexible, and patient. I retired last year after 33 years of United States Air Force military and civilian service. I have earned a BA in Sociology and an AS in Engineering Design Drafting. Throughout my career, I often found myself providing both individual tutoring and group instruction. One of my most enjoyable positions was as a full-time satellite scheduler instructor where I would train newly hired employees both individually and as a group. Equally important to me during this time was my work as a volunteer helping children with special needs and/or learning disabilities (with Head Start and public schools) and completing nine credit hours towards a MA in Special Education with a 4.0 GPA.
As a volunteer, I have enjoyed teaching children with learning disabilities. I believe I can make a difference as a tutor. For example, one day I overheard my son's Kindergarten teacher say she would have to ... read more

I have also done some student teaching in a 9th grade geography class. Also, I student taught an 8th grade language arts class, where I was able to incorporate art with literature, stressing the importance of art in the classroom.
