The key to my tutoring approach is that every student is unique. After we discuss what each student wants to focus on, I ask them to write a paper about a subject that we agree on. Then I take them through several revisions, with each revision focusing on key things they need to work on. They were told they would be videotaped & critiqued by their class members..BUT their presentation would be on their military specialty (eg. a Motor Pool SGT would do a class on vehicle maintenance)..thereby increasing the "comfort level" of the presenter & enhancing the knowledge of the class.
