About Me

Experience Summary

I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succeed. As an undergraduate student, I volunteered as a Peer Mentor in order to help new students become accustomed to their classes. I also worked as a Peer Mentor for students who were struggling with their grades. Peer Mentors are carefully selected by Rochester Institute of Technology through a detailed application process. I volunteered as an English tutor, as well as a proofreader of essays, research papers, and projects. I have had the opportunity to work at a daycare for several years with children ranging from 6 weeks of age to 12 years. I have loved being able to help these children grow, learn, and succeed in their education. As a tutor, my specialties are American Sign Language and English. My undergraduate studies were in American Sign Language-English interpreting. I had a concentration both in Communications and in Creative writing. I graduated with honors from Rochester Institute of Technology, and was given the Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar award.

Teaching Style

When it comes to language, I believe that people tend to learn best by doing. I also believe wholeheartedly that successfully learning a language depends on your exposure to that language. Continuous exposure to any language can help language acquisition. For English, regardless of what specifically the student is struggling with, consistent reading and writing practice is key. With a manual language like ASL, practicing signing skills and receptive skills is invaluable. Finally, I believe that people learn better when their strengths are pointed out and highlighted rather than their weaknesses. Many students who struggle in school are caught in a perpetual cycle of perceived failures. Optimism, unwavering support, and excitement are key when working with any student.

Subject Commentary

Creative Writing Proficiency: Expert
I completed a concentration in Creative Writing while obtaining my undergraduate degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. I received all A's for my work in creative writing courses. I was awarded the Creative Writing Award at RIT for 2013.
English This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I have won several awards for my English writing and received 5's on the two major AP English tests before going on to complete my undergraduate degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. I was not required by RIT to take any additional English classes, but took several anyway because of my love of the English Language.
Grammar Proficiency: Expert
Because of my love for the English language, I have an aptitude for grammar and phonetics. I have worked as an English grammar tutor and proofreader in a college level setting. I have also worked extensively on grammar with children ages 5-8.
Hearing Impaired This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I recently graduated with honors from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I graduated with a BS in American Sign Language interpreting. Through 4 years of rigorous study, I learned American Sign Language, PSE, as well as Cued Speech. I have interacted with and interpreted for a multitude of Deaf and hard of hearing people. I have worked with deaf and hard of hearing children, as well as Deaf and hard of hearing adults. I have also worked with deaf and hard of hearing people with a variety of disabilities. I have taken several Deaf-taught classes on Deaf Culture, as well as classes on Deaf oppression.
Poetry Proficiency: Expert
I won the Outstanding Poetry award in my Highschool in 2008, and later won the Creative Writing: Poetry award at Rochester institute of technology in 2013. I took several creative writing classes while obtaining my BS, including Poetry Workshop classes.
Sign Language This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I recently graduated with high honors from Rochester Institute of Technology's American Sign Language Interpreting program at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I completed my four year degree with a 3.94 GPA. During my time at NTID, I learned ASL by taking a variety of rigorous classes, interacting with my Deaf peers, and attending frequent tutoring sessions. In addition to my studies of American Sign Language, I also took many classes in ASL regarding Deaf Culture. All of my Sign Language professors were Deaf, as were my Deaf Culture professors.
Special Education Proficiency: Experienced
While attaining my undergraduate degree, I had the wonderful opportunity to work at a daycare for over 3 years. I worked with children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Several of the children that I worked with were delayed learners or had learning disabilities. I have also transliterated and interpreted for children and adults with a variety of physical and learning disabilities.
