My comments on tutoring Spanish : Although I'm not fluent, I would call myself proficient in Spanish. I can hold and enjoy a conversation. I can definitely be of help to beginners.

I've been tutoring many friends or meeting 1 on 1 with University students to help them with English, German, and Spanish for about 4 years. Often, these have been unofficial language-exchange scenarios; for instance, I would meet with someone with whom I would speak for half an hour in English, then half an hour in Spanish (or whichever language it happened to be). This can be a very challenging and very exciting method of learning, and I believe it is the most effective.
I am a firm believer in the immersion style of learning languages. Understanding the grammar and acquiring a decent vocabulary are of course indispensable, but from personal experience learning a variety of languages, I've found that simply speaking is the best way to learn. Daily observance of grammatical errors, such as on restaurant menus, on printed literature, and on school assignments made my decision to major in English much easier. My English degree necessitated that I write multiple essays that focused on grammar, coherence, elimination of wordiness, and other aspects of proper English writing. Socratic, I like the students to build on what they already know so that it becomes an extension of their long term memory not another short term memory soon forgotten. I have found ways to connect almost any subject matter from physics to algebra to chemistry nomenclature into something one already knows. If one uses long term memory pegs one can "file" things in memory and recall with very little effort.

I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, my wife and I moved to South Korea and taught English.
