My comments on tutoring Spanish: I have an endorsement in Modern Classical Languages

My teaching career began as an Educational Assistant in 1977, in the state of California. Because of my daughter's medical needs, I was not able to finish my education as planned. Fortunately, I did not give up, I resumed my studies and in 2006, I earned my teaching degree. I'm endorsed in TESOL, Modern Classical Languages, and Bilingual Education. I have high standards for my students, and I expect responsibility on their part. I have a good sense of humor, and enjoy hands-on activities.

Although I'm not fluent, I would call myself proficient in Spanish. I can hold and enjoy a conversation. I can definitely be of help to beginners. I've been tutoring many friends or meeting 1 on 1 with University students to help them with English, German, and Spanish for about 4 years. Often, these have been unofficial language-exchange scenarios; for instance, I would meet with someone with whom I would speak for half an hour in English, then half an hour in Spanish (or whichever language it happened to be). This can be a very challenging and very exciting method of learning, and I believe it is the most effective. I am a firm believer in the immersion style of learning languages. Understanding the grammar and acquiring a decent vocabulary are of course indispensable, but from personal experience learning a variety of languages, I've found that simply speaking is the best way to learn.

I began my college career with ambitions to become an elementary school teacher, earning 33 credit hours in Marquette University's Elementary Education program and logging 80 hours of observation and in-class aide work in the Milwaukee Public School system. Upon leaving this program and picking up at the Universtiy of New Mexico, I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Spanish, leaving me with near-native proficiency in that language and a burgeoning ability in Portuguese, which was my minor field of study. Before beginning at UNM, I taught for one year as a team teacher in a preschool catering to homeless families where I was exposed to teaching in a setting heavily influenced by social and personal developmental delays, leading to some creative teaching experience. During this time, I also spent a semester tutoring an English-speaking first grader in Spanish. I have always been dra

One of the most rewarding aspects about guiding students is finding the way they channel their thoughts and using it to their advantage. As a result of being ADHD, I am sympathetic to the struggles many students have to concentrate and as a result I am a tenacious but patient teacher, always determined to make the lesson fun and interesting as well as educational. I choose to live by example, just as my favorite teachers and professors did with me. I give children respect, boost their confidence and make them love what they are doing. Even though I have found my approach to be successful, I am always looking for new ways to engage the mind of my student. As a tutor, I provide goals for the children. I find that once the students have goals, they are much more excited about reaching them, and do reach them with my help. Learning is fun and exciting, just as it should be! Thanks to a f

Through out my experience tutoring a diverse group of kids, I have learned to love and appreciate the art of teaching. It’s important to understand the many differences and backgrounds in every child, only then, we can begin to understand their special needs. I do believe everyone can learn given the opportunity, and resources needed to flourish to their maximum potential. I also believe that as an educator, you must challenge them to a superior level, strive for excellence. It is our job as educators to ignite the spark of knowledge; it is our job to encourage them to go far beyond of what it is expected of them As a recent graduate from the University of New Mexico. I have earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Spanish and BS in Sociology, this two combined have allowed me to understand social sciences to a new level. As you can expect my grammatical skills have flourished due to the combi

I taught English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, then received a Master's Degree in teaching and worked in Mexico, Japan, Iran, and the United States, teaching and also coordinating a bilingual program for refugees with the Tacoma Public Schools. I then became a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State, serving on five continents and three islands. I speak Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, and Dutch, and have extensive experience in writing and editing a variety of reports and related documents. I work to identify each student's strengths and to build upon these, while also noting areas for improvement and tailoring lessons and assignments designed to address these areas. Because people learn in several different ways, I strive to individualize instructional approaches based on my perception of what works best for each student. I am unfailingly patient and polite. I

I have always enjoyed helping other people Throughout my life. I think tutoring is a good learning resource for students. I begin my Spanish lessons with students examining what they know and what they have experienced about the course topic. Beyond this "re-seeing," I then need to provide material and experience that takes them beyond what they know to what it is possible for them to know. I see my teaching beliefs as necessarily dynamic. Yet, though they are continually changed by my reading, thinking, experience, and especially by my research, I have found that there are certain beliefs that I have held onto for some years. I am confident that my teaching experience with kids, young professionals and adults, combined with my education at Antonio of Nebrija University of Spain, will verify my qualifications. I specially love working with kids and youth. At Nebrija University, I h

My formal teaching experience is limited to two years with seventh graders and high schoolers. When I pursed graduate work in cell biology, experiences with formal education were limited. However giving seminars and training technical staff was common and bears similarity to formal teaching. Tutoring is a happy mix between formal and informal teaching combining focused attention and designing specific tasks for student growth. In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit. I firmly believe this style encourages the student’s creativity and belief in their own capabilities. Coupled to the formal teaching and certainly as important is the relationship

During my one year contract in South Korea I taught children of all ages, from 6 to 15. Working with children was very enjoyable and rewarding. My style of teaching is very upbeat and interactive. I also like to use different methods of teaching focusing on participation. I believe that children learn more if the class is lively and engaging. My goal is to make the class fun as well as educational. In Costa Rica I taught English to business professionals at several different companies. Although teaching adults is much different than teaching children, I used the same style of teaching. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, my wife and I moved to South Korea and taught English. This opportunity allowed us to gain teaching experience and become absorbed in another culture. Upon completing our one year contract we then decided to move to Costa Rica an

Socratic, I like the students to build on what they already know so that it becomes an extension of their long term memory not another short term memory soon forgotten. I have found ways to connect almost any subject matter from physics to algebra to chemistry nomenclature into something one already knows. If one uses long term memory pegs one can "file" things in memory and recall with very little effort. I have received a degree in English and was a pre-law student. I owned a real estate company in 1990s. I was in the Navy (scored 95% on ASVAB) and worked in the field of intelligence. I acquired legal experience working within real estate and finance. I have an intricate knowledge of contract law, working knowledge of medical law - where it governs patient interaction, privacy, medical records and patient rights. I was working as an statistician researcher for UNICEF when I decided to become a math teacher. I realized that my real passion was not conducting research, but teaching students. I have earned an BA in Economics from University of Massachusetts, but I decided to go back to school to get a masters degree in education.I focus my thesis on multilingual math education, and was awarded the Iowa State Hudson Human Sciences Scholarship. My diverse experiences have helped me become a well-rounded flexible and professional teacher who enjoys collaborating and learning from people from all backgrounds, ability levels, and ages. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way. After completing my degree in 2007 at the University of New Mexico, I moved to Denver, CO and taught for one year at Morey Middle School. Teaching anything is a very gratifying experience. The look on a person’s face upon acquisition of a new skill or acquisition of any new information is worth a hundred words. My approach to teaching many times involves humor. Sometimes even a little humor serves to relax a person and that can facilitate learning. An obstacle to learning is sometimes the tenseness and frustration of attempting to understand anything. Because we learn in many different ways, teaching requires an approach that is understood by the learner, not what the teacher feels is most acceptable. I employ the teaching style that if a student does not understand the subject matter, it is time to change that method and explore the student’s best abilities to learn. My ultimate goal is the success of the student, especially if the student can say, “Oh, I get it now.” Daily observance of grammatical errors, such as
