My comments on tutoring Spanish : Although I'm not fluent, I would call myself proficient in Spanish. I can hold and enjoy a conversation. I can definitely be of help to beginners.

I've been tutoring many friends or meeting 1 on 1 with University students to help them with English, German, and Spanish for about 4 years. Often, these have been unofficial language-exchange scenarios; for instance, I would meet with someone with whom I would speak for half an hour in English, then half an hour in Spanish (or whichever language it happened to be). This can be a very challenging and very exciting method of learning, and I believe it is the most effective.
I am a firm believer in the immersion style of learning languages. Understanding the grammar and acquiring a decent vocabulary are of course indispensable, but from personal experience learning a variety of languages, I've found that simply speaking is the best way to learn. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit.
