I recently graduated from college, with a degree in math. Personally, I love maths, because everything in math is logical, and maths is the most fundamental subject for a lot of things. I think that it is important to find the types of learning that each student finds easiest to understand, and tailor the course so that it works well with their particular learning abilities. This can easily be done in a classroom setting as well as an individual basis. In either case, while I am teaching I think that it is important to understand the topic we are on before moving to the next one. I was a Teaching Assistant for one semester of Physical Chemistry at the University of Utah. This is literally the most difficult course in the Chemistry department for undergraduates. I was responsible for 6X 1 hour sessions per week over the course of a semester. I also would handle questions outside of class.
I think largely the greatest barrier to learning is a background context for the material. Many adults are still scared of Algebra because of some past experience as a kid.
