I became interested in tutoring and teaching as an undergraduate. I began as a basic chemistry tutor, but quickly worked my way up to a lead tutor position. I then took on the responsibility of being a T.A. in both the chemistry lecture class as well as lab. After graduating college, my career led me on a path of training teachers, developing curriculum for schools and teachers, and finally into the position I am now, as a K-5 Technology Instructor. My teaching style devotes about half the time to direct instruction, but I make that a firm upper limit. The student must do the active learning in a classroom, and I foster this by Socratic questioning, discussions, and project work. In college I was able to tutor children in reading and math at Tucson Metropolitan Ministries. After I received my bachelor's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology (minoring in science education), I wanted to teach youth in an alternative setting. I taught for six months at Lutheran, Retreats, Camps and Conferences in California. I gained experience in hands-on teaching styles and how to provide concrete examples for abstract ideas.
