I have never had formal experience tutoring. However Throughout my years of schooling I would participate in study groups which I see as everyone tutoring eachother. I also have two siblings, one very close in age and the other is approximately four years younger. Needless to say, I frequently helped my younger sister with her homework. Just to clarify when I say 'help' I do not mean I just gave her the answers, I would make sure that I either explained or demonstrated the correct way to approach a problem in order to make sure that she understood how to apply the knowlege come test time. Phonics is critical to excellent reading. Children are being taught minimal phonics and the focus is on sight reading/ whole language. The issue is that children are being taught to remember what words look like rather than knowing how to use sound and rules to reading in order to figure out words.
