I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

I think largely the greatest barrier to learning is a background context for the material. Many adults are still scared of Algebra because of some past experience as a kid. I first address the pupil's concerns and history with the subject. My commitment is to create a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Next I find the best way that the student learns. Most people prefer one modality over another in terms of retention of the material. If we are looking at physics, some people work best with what they hear, others with what they see or they can put their hands on. As a student working towards a Mathematics degree, very quickly I migrated away from the applied and into the pure, theoretical, aspects of Mathematics. Being familiar with math from several different pure standpoints (Topology, Algebra, and Analysis) I understand the benefit of being taught a concept from different viewpoints.
