I think largely the greatest barrier to learning is a background context for the material. Many adults are still scared of Algebra because of some past experience as a kid. I first address the pupil's concerns and history with the subject. My commitment is to create a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Next I find the best way that the student learns. Most people prefer one modality over another in terms of retention of the material. If we are looking at physics, some people work best with what they hear, others with what they see or they can put their hands on.
