Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! As a language therapist, my training and experience includes the Orton-Gillingham approach and Barton Reading. It is a joy to provide remediation with students with reading problems/dyslexia. To hear and see the progress of my students is always exciting!

I am a very patient with students, trying many different ways to try to get them to understand. If I need to use phonics or other word recognition strategies I will.
I have taught reading for the last 17 years to struggling readers in a public school. The students that I teach have shown improvement in reading and writing on the state achievement test for the last 10 years. For example, one day I overheard my son's Kindergarten teacher say she would have to hold back one of the students from entering first grade because the child could not count to ten or say the alphabet. I asked this teacher if I could be a volunteer tutor for this child an hour once a week over the remaining three months of the school year to see if I could help turn the situation around. I have been tutoring my step-son in reading, writing and math for two years. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of six so we opted to have a tutor work with him. After two years of outside tutoring, his mother and I decided that I would begin tutoring him. I had his tutor instruct me on his methods and various tools he used for teaching a dyslexic child. I then took over the tutoring and have been tutoring 2-3 times a week ever since. He is now 10 and doing very well in school. I plan to work with him as long as necessary. I also currently volunteer at his school, helping with the 3rd grade Math Club. I prefer to tutor 3rd through 6th grade age children but will consider other school age children.
