Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! As a language therapist, my training and experience includes the Orton-Gillingham approach and Barton Reading. It is a joy to provide remediation with students with reading problems/dyslexia. To hear and see the progress of my students is always exciting!

As a tutor, I am able to present material and concepts to students in an easy-to-understand manner. Often, I look for ways to relate to students as individuals and connect the academic studies to their personal interests. I have a personable and upbeat teaching style while challenging, pacing, motivating, and holding students accountable for their learning progress.
My qualifications for teaching reading and dyslexia include use of the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Barton Reading System. With specific teaching methods, students who struggle with decoding, fluency, spelling, comprehension, and writing can be successfully helped to overcome these problems. Each student is provided individual lesson planning, according to his or her demonstrated strengths and weaknesses.

I have over 23 years as a career professional of government IT services. This includes, contract negotiations, Network Engineering, CAD, Security, Multi-media, Graphic Arts and Photography. I have written a 120pg thesis entitled "Datawarehousing." I enjoy my small business "Digital Advertising" and likely have the most tutoring skills in this area.
One on one works best for me...however my teaching experience was in a classroom environment utilizing mostly Powerpoint Slides with questions and answers. I taught IT type skills "Operating Procedures" to beginning level IT support technicians. I do not hhave an official teaching certification.

As a volunteer, I have enjoyed teaching children with learning disabilities. I believe I can make a difference as a tutor. For example, one day I overheard my son's Kindergarten teacher say she would have to hold back one of the students from entering first grade because the child could not count to ten or say the alphabet. I asked this teacher if I could be a volunteer tutor for this child an hour once a week over the remaining three months of the school year to see if I could help turn the situation around. One of my proudest moments came shortly after the tutoring period ended in which the Kindergarten teacher announced she would be able to enter this child into first grade along with the rest of his classmates!

I began working with children who were diagnosed with autism my first year of college (I did this for 7 years). I felt a sense of accomplishment as I watched them grow as people. I realized through these experiences that I wanted to help people learn and become accomplished. Later, I decided to student teach in graduate school. I taught three different writing courses over three years, including this past year as a part-time instructor. I have been tutoring my step-son in reading, writing and math for two years. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of six so we opted to have a tutor work with him. After two years of outside tutoring, his mother and I decided that I would begin tutoring him. I had his tutor instruct me on his methods and various tools he used for teaching a dyslexic child. I then took over the tutoring and have been tutoring 2-3 times a week ever since. He is now 10 and doing very well in school. I plan to work with him as long as necessary. I also currently volunteer at his school, helping with the 3rd grade Math Club. I prefer to tutor 3rd through 6th grade age children but will consider other school age children.
