Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! As a language therapist, my training and experience includes the Orton-Gillingham approach and Barton Reading. It is a joy to provide remediation with students with reading problems/dyslexia. To hear and see the progress of my students is always exciting!

As a tutor, I am able to present material and concepts to students in an easy-to-understand manner. Often, I look for ways to relate to students as individuals and connect the academic studies to their personal interests. I have a personable and upbeat teaching style while challenging, pacing, motivating, and holding students accountable for their learning progress.
My qualifications for teaching reading and dyslexia include use of the Orton-Gillingham approach and the Barton Reading System. With specific teaching methods, students who struggle with decoding, fluency, spelling, comprehension, and writing can be successfully helped to overcome these problems. For the past four years I have been working at The Children's ARK-A residential treatment facility for at-risk youth. I was a teaching assistant my first year and I have been teaching for the last three years all content areas and subjects for grades 5-8. As for my educational background, I am currently on a TTE (Temporary Teaching license)and I will have my SPED generalist permanent license in May. Also, I will have an added endorsement and a Master's degree this summer 2010. A Little Bit About Me...

I retired last year after 33 years of United States Air Force military and civilian service. I have earned a BA in Sociology and an AS in Engineering Design Drafting. Throughout my career, I often found myself providing both individual tutoring and group instruction. One of my most enjoyable positions was as a full-time satellite scheduler instructor where I would train newly hired employees both individually and as a group. A Little Bit About Me...

I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do. I like to try to facilitate and push my students to ask questions and talk to me as a peer. I always try to give at least three compliments to every criticism because students are often too hard on themselves. For some reason, most of the students I have worked with have had an English teacher along the line who has made them feel "stupid." It is amazing what boosting confidence can do!
