I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. Repetition is very helpful and note cards are good for memorization. Taking notes is a good way for the student to stay focused. A little comedy helps too to help students to remember. I enjoy helping students, adult or younger, feel the success of learning. Sometimes it is a struggle, but it is always fulfilling to see the relief and happiness they feel when they do succeed.
My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. A Little Bit About Me...

I have found through my most recent teaching and tutoring opportunities that all children have the capability to learn. Some just need that one-on-one assistance in order to succeed. I believe in hands-on learning that provides students of all learning styles with the opportunity to excel. I also believe in discussion as another means of learning through the method of Socratic questioning for all levels of English learning. A Little Bit About Me...

As a person who holds both a BA and MA in English, each with concentrations in writing (creative and technical, respectively), I am qualified to, and have for several years, tutored English language studies skills, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehesion, to students from the third grade through college. I have also taught English composition at the college level. Additionally, I have tutored students from primary to secondary school in other liberal arts subjects where English language and study skills are applicable, such as social studies and history.
