A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. Repetition is very helpful and note cards are good for memorization. Taking notes is a good way for the student to stay focused. A little comedy helps too to help students to remember. I enjoy helping students, adult or younger, feel the success of learning. Sometimes it is a struggle, but it is always fulfilling to see the relief and happiness they feel when they do succeed.
My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. A Little Bit About Me...

In order to achieve the knowledge necessary to teach secondary level students reading and writing skills I have been driven to achieve a Masters degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Secondary English. Through extensive research of learning strategies for both English speaking and English Language Learners, I have gained knowledge of the best techniques for learning English Language skills. As a substitute teacher and student teacher, I have gained experience in both tutoring and classroom teaching in order to be able to teach my students the diverse techniques they need to excel in both basic reading and writing skills.

As a person who holds both a BA and MA in English, each with concentrations in writing (creative and technical, respectively), I am qualified to, and have for several years, tutored English language studies skills, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehesion, to students from the third grade through college. I have also taught English composition at the college level.
