I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it." A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. Eight years ago my nephew became part of the Arizona juvenile system. Having dealt with all that entails, I made the decision to make a difference in childrens lives. It is my belief that children need positive role models in their life beyond the mother and father. I was lucky to have such role models in my life and would like the opportunity to be one myself. A Little Bit About Me...

The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. In all cases, I create a relationship with my students in which they can feel comfortable being honest and open with me. Positive reinforcement is the key.

I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities. I find teaching to be an extremely rewarding activity. I immensely enjoy the process of finding the best ways to reach a particular child, especially one who is struggling with a given subject or concept. Finding ways to remove the fear of math or apathy towards learning in general and developing in the child an appreciation for of a historical perspective the are just some of the goals a good educator needs to have in mind.
