FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY TUTOR (K-12) mdonasci@fau.edu

Business student at Florida Atlantic University. I graduated from A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts with honors in the visual arts, specializing in Architecture and Mathematics. I have also tutored for 4 years now while in school by teaching a wide variety of subjects to students from the ages of 5-20.
I use a Reciprocal/Practice based tutoring style. This an effective method because it allows me to interact with the student and help them grow more efficiently while holding an open discussion environment in each lesson. I then reinforce it with practice based assignments which are followed up with reviews in the beginning of the following class. This makes the student not only memorize definitions, but to also understand the reasoning behind different concepts.

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : Although I am well versed in this specific test and all of the skills that are assessed therein, this test will be phased out along with the FCAT in 2014. Its replacement has yet to be identified, but it will probably be designed to assess the requirements of the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) that are being fully implemented this school year in lieu of the Florida Sunshine Standards. See my description under Writing for a general picture of a tutoring plan for writing. All tutoring plans are individualized to meet the needs of the student.

I believe that everyone can learn; that we are all life long learners and that patience and encouragement are key to a successful academic experience for all who seek to improve their skills. I further believe in focusing on the strengths of my students and individualizing materials and activities to meet the needs of the student.

I received my International Baccalaureate program certifying me to master challenging courses for greater, global knowledge. I've been a tutor at the Lake Worth Library for five years. I also believe that children are individuals and learn in different ways. I did not pursue a teaching career in the elementary school because I felt that my time was spent 50% discipline and 50% teaching. I much preferred the small group setting where I could focus more on the individualities of each child. With tutoring, I would have to adapt my teaching style for each child based on his/her learning style.
I attended one of the top programs for Early Childhood Education, where I spent two years student teaching a multi-age first and second grade class. After graduation, I selected a corporate path instead of the classroom, where I learned instruction design and delivery for adults as well. I left the corporate world in 2002 with the birth of my first child. I have spent the last two years 'teaching' my daughter in the home. I have always believed that one-on-one teaching i ... read more

It may sound cliché but I have always loved learning. I enjoy the unique thrill that comes with grasping a new concept or finally discovering the solution to a difficult math problem. When I tutor, I try to pass the excitement I feel along. I believe my best attributes as a tutor are patience and the ability to break complex problems down so they are manageable. I would love to help you or your child gain the confidence that comes from mastering a subject that was previously challenging.
I have been tutoring for almost 10 years. I tutored through my high school years at Suncoast, where I took a heavy load of IB and AP courses. I also tutored through college at McGill University, where I majored in Marketing. I enjoy tutoring in various subjects such as math, English, literature, and most business classes.

My purpose for being on this earth is to teach. It is my passion. One of the most important factors contributing to a child's success is the relationship with the educator. I make every effort to discover the student's interests and base our learning on those interest. It is my goal to make learning enjoyable. My students want to come to school and ask their parents to send them even when they are sick. I have never had discipline problems in my classroom because when children are actively engaged in learning the have no reason to misbehavior. I focus on each child's strength and develop their weaknesses by exposing their strengths. It is important for children to be in a positve environment, so I attempt to make sure each child has at least one positive experience throughout our time together. I like to laugh and have fun, so at times I can be non-traditional. I like to dance ... read more

For me, teaching and tutoring are a 'passion'. My personnel belief is that education is paramount in our lives and should be accessible to everyone regardless of one's ability to learn. With the tutor's patience, enthusiasm, dedication and encouragement many students reach a level that at the onset they did not believe they could achieve. In my opinion, there exists nothing as rewarding than passing on to a child or young/older adults the love of learning.

I strongly believe that all children can be educated if you use the teaching approach that fits their needs. I am personally a visual person and therefore I teach everything visual and hands-on. I feel that when students can see things and have an interaction that get a better understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

Since high school, I have been very active in the community. I volunteered for a number of different organizations to help students at several grade levels with their studies. My most recent experience was last year with students at an elementary school in Riviera Beach, FL. I acted as a teacher's aid for a few hours a week, and also participated in a "HOST" program, to help students individually gain the knowledge and practice to be able to read at or above their grade level. As a student pursuing a doctorate degree in pharmacy, I have had exposure to a wide variety of subjects, with emphasis in the math and science areas. I have completed mathematics to the calculus level, and have taken several years of various biology, chemistry, and other more specific science courses. I feel that through my six years in college, I am very well trained to tutor students, and often helped my peers t ... read more
